Map an Attack Journey

Plan, execute, and document a multi-turn attack sequence. Journey mapping forces you to think through the full attack chain before executing, and creates a reproducible record of what happened.

UX Origin

Customer Journey Mapping — A UX research method for visualizing every touchpoint in a user's experience with a product. Maps typically include stages, actions, thoughts, emotions, and pain points across time.

Red team application: Multi-turn attacks are journeys. Each turn is a touchpoint with decision points, expected responses, and pivots based on what happens. Mapping the journey before and during execution prevents ad-hoc wandering and captures learnings.

When to Use

  • Before executing a multi-turn attack (plan the sequence)
  • During execution (document what actually happens)
  • After execution (analyze deviations and learnings)
  • When you need reproducibility (another tester should be able to follow the map)

Setup

Step 1: Define Decision Point Logic

Before executing, define your branching rules:

Response typeAction
Full complianceProceed to next planned step. Document as finding if compliance is itself the vulnerability.
Partial complianceUse the partial response as a foothold. What part was provided? What was withheld? Adjust next turn to target the withheld portion.
RefusalPivot to alternative approach. Document refusal language (it may leak information about what the model is filtering).
DeflectionThe model changed the subject or gave a generic response. Try a different framing in the next turn.
Over-complianceThe model gave more than expected. Explore whether this opens additional attack vectors not in the original plan.

Step 2: Plan Journey Steps

For each turn in the attack sequence:
